The lands where Hotel Guantánamo was built belonged, until 1954, to the Educational Catholic Religious Order “Juan Bautista de la Salle”. These were given as a present to the Religious Order, in the 20 th Century by the Sugar Company.
For many years all these terrenes were sugar fields and uncultivated grounds. On 1954, the Caribbean S.A. Bank of Capitalization, Saving and Construction bought them with the aim to settle a residentiary neighborhood; which in the beginning was named “New Guantánamo”. Later, perhaps to gratify the sellers (Religious Order), the name was changed to Saint Catalina de Riccis of the Caribbean Bank. Finally, it became into “The Caribbean Neighborhood”, as it is known today.
With the triumph of the Revolution the Bank and all its proprieties were nationalized. Consequently, the revolutionary government stated to construct a large quantity of buildings for workers in this territory.
In 1985, the National Celebration for the Anniversary of the Moncada Quarter Assault was held in Guantánamo City. Many buildings started to be constructed to honor the historical date. Hotel Guantánamo was one of them. Located in the Caribbean district, it is characterized by the confort and beauty of the modern epoch.
When the edification was concluded it was delivered to the Cuban National Industry of Tourism, later the Ministry of Tourism. Islazul Touristic Company has been running Hotel Guantánamo till now.
